Abstract :
This paper summarizes a forecast study to determine the outcomes of the current aviation industry projects/programs and envisioned Free Flight concepts. The paper documents the methodology and results of the communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) technology needs "gap" assessment. The communications needs were determined by the following: definition of an entity/object architecture; determination of information exchange needs between entities; analysis of communication performance requirements; development of traffic loading and models. The analysis process yielded 20 potential "technology gaps", which this paper identifies. Each of these areas is discussed in significant detail.
