Abstract
Under different parameters (wavelength, input OSNR and modulation format), we have investigated the behavior of four types of SOAs to determine if they can be used as power boosters in 40 Gb/s transmission systems. Fast dynamics devices have the tendency to show inferior linear amplification properties both for RZ and NRZ formats. Slower devices show good behavior as linear amplifiers however, for 40 Gb/s purposes, those devices must also have sufficient gain and high saturated output power. Among the different devices investigated, SOA #1 shows overall excellent performance.
