  • Abstract
The increasing demand for a range of services with varying traffic flow characteristics, and the need for seamless wireless access, have led to a growing interest in multi-service mobile satellite systems (MSS). In this paper, a new approach to the problem of resource utilization for multi-service MSS using the resource reservation protocol (RSVP) is put forward. The approach divides the traffic into two classes, which are referred to as quality of service (QoS) and best effort (BE) traffics. Quality of service traffic is associated with delay sensitive applications and best effort traffic with services that are insensitive to delay. A proposed algorithm that uses RSVP for time varying QoS traffic bandwidth demand is put forward. Through simulation, the effective use of RSVP in meeting the time varying QoS traffic bandwidth demand and the conservation of the limited available MSS resources is shown.
