Abstract :
For planning and dimensioning of high-quality radio networks interactive planning tools are absolutely required. Since analytical models provide fast and precise calculations they are very suitable for such tools. In this paper we present an analytical model for determining the stability of downlink connections and soft blocking rates in UMTS networks. Given the distribution of the UNITS traffic and the attenuation between the mobiles and the base stations using any given path loss prediction, for any connection in the downlink fulfilling the transmission power requirements can be predicted. Imperfection of power control for dedicated channels and the impact of slow fading are taken into account. To enable fast calculation fittings for the determined probability functions are given. Therefore it permits interactively planning even for very large networks with thousands of cells.
