Abstract :
In this paper, we use simulation studies to evaluate the benefit of QoS differentiation at the ATM level for the ATM-based transport using ATM Adaptation Layer type 2 (AAL2) under different traffic mixes, peak data rates, and delay requirements for data traffic. We also evaluate the bandwidth efficiency of the ATM/AAL2 transport when the real-time variable bit rate (rt-VBR) service category is used as compared with when the constant bit rate (CBR) service category is used under different mixes of voice and data traffic. The results show that the use of QoS differentiation at the ATM level provides significant bandwidth savings in most cases. Also, the bandwidth savings from rt-VBR become significant when there is considerable amount of bursty data traffic and the number of base stations is large enough.
