Abstract :
Utilisation of renewable (solar) energy resources to develop remote rural areas of developing countries has been discussed for at least four decades in various international forums. Several sporadic attempts have been undertaken throughout the world to promote this idea. Yet, there has been no significant progress and many of the remote rural areas are probably in worse condition now than ever before. Unquestionably, energy is needed for rural development, for creating workplaces, and for improving productivity and living conditions. Locally available renewable energy resources provide the best and the only long-term sustainable option with minimal impacts on global environment.
