Abstract
We present a new method of constructing hierarchical surface models which are represented by binary trees of faces. The models are useful both for hierarchical approximation of the surfaces and for efficient computation using the face-based hierarchy. Our method first creates a roughly approximated model, then generates hierarchical models by iterative splitting faces. We also describe a method for dynamic control of levels of detail (LODs) of the surface models, and show the results of control of LODs by a gaze point.
