Abstract :
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a serious health problem in the US and abroad. A serious complication of DM is peripheral neuropathy (PN) and neuropathic ulcers. In this study, we compared the tissue stiffness as determined by indentation procedures with tissue densities as determined by spiral CT. The measurements were made on the mid-foot of 5 subjects with DM, PN, and a history of foot ulcers, and on 4 control subjects to provide a wide array of tissue characteristics. The data was analyzed using our parallel 3-element model. We found R2 values of 0.26 (K1) and 0.37 (XS) indicating a weak correlation between our tissue indentation model variables and the tissue density measurements.
