Abstract
This paper presents the development of a new directional power line protection using fault transients. In the presented technique, the relay installed at the substation busbar is responsible for the detection of fault direction with respect to the busbar. The transient signals captured from each power line connected to the busbar are analyzed and compared to determine the fault direction. Simulation results show that this scheme is suitable for all types of faults occurring at different positions on the power lines. It also provides higher sensitivity as compared with traditional protection schemes.
