Abstract
In this paper we show that the alternate polarization of adjacent bits in N×40 Gb/s NRZ based transmission system over SSMF fiber can significantly improve the transmission performance and spectral efficiency through suppression of nonlinear effects in the fiber. This new modulation method shows even better nonlinear features than conventional RZ modulation and enables a spectral efficiency of 0.8 bit/s/Hz.
