Abstract :
The traditional final exam in calculus-based physics is being replaced with a final project. The project consists of problems that require students to apply their skill and knowledge to new situations. Students collaborate with their classmates, discussing solution strategies. At the regularly scheduled final exam meeting, students answer additional questions that require them to build on their solution to each of the problems on the project. The final project increases student learning, improves student performance at the end of the course, and is an effective method to assess student achievement and understanding.
