Abstract
Engineering students are employed to work on product innovation projects at the Kansas State University (KSU) Engineering Learning Center (ELC). The ELC was designed to accomplish a two-fold mission: to enhance the education of engineering students and to promote economic development in the state. A primary means to accomplish this mission is to hire engineering students to work on real product innovation projects for client companies under the tutelage of experienced engineers. Projects have resulted in new products that are now being produced and sold and machines that have been designed and built to improve the manufacturing operations for AMI clients. This paper details the KSU AMI model for using product innovation projects to simultaneously enhance the education of engineering students and to develop the state´s economy.
