Abstract
The introduction of the new vocoders in CDMA and GSM networks suggest that they are not merely intended to improve the speech quality but to enhance system capacities. As this may be primarily the case but certainly there are significant trade-offs involved between increased system capacity and speech quality. This paper provides an analytical framework to understand the AMR and the SMV vocoder concepts. This paper also attempts to derive the increments in capacity and assess the impact on voice quality due to the introduction of AMR and SMV vocoders in GSM and CDMA2000 system respectively.
