Abstract
An analytical model named "equivalent length (EL)" of a packet is proposed for end-to-end characterization of a packet over QoS guaranteed networks. By the model introduced, we demonstrate that in the ATM environment the transferring performance of a packet is embodied at the first hop of its path and that the transferring delay of a packet is statistically equivalent to that of a cell if each switching node is not overloaded. With the help of EL, we also make an analysis of the buffer needed at the destination point and develop an estimation method for practical purposes. The obtained results are also true for other QoS support architectures where segmentation and reassembly take place.
