Abstract :
Quality of service (QoS) guarantees can be provided within a network by relying on the integrated services, differentiated services, and active networking approaches. The three approaches are presented in several papers, but none provide a comparison between all of them. Therefore, this paper overviews the key functionality and the relative strengths and weaknesses of video-specific QoS control techniques based on the three approaches. This overview discusses both academic research and practice in the industry. The quality assurance and scalability of the three approaches are then compared. Finally, future research directions on each approach are suggested.
