  • Abstract
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through its Office of Ocean Exploration (OE), has embarked on an ambitious effort to support a national strategy for exploring the ocean realm. An important part of this effort is the establishment of a data management capability for the large and diverse data sets that will be captured and made available for timely access by a variety of stakeholders. A large and important subset of these data is digital imagery and video. To support OE and other line offices producing increasing volumes of these data, the NOAA data management infrastructure must be expanded to accommodate these data, as well as storing, classifying, processing, archiving, and providing users with innovative, functional access. This paper introduces a methodology to that video data, and their associated metadata, which can be centrally managed and archived by a dedicated facility under the cognizance of the NOAA Central Library in Silver Spring, Maryland. This effort is also consistent with the OE Data Management Strategy.
