Abstract
This paper presents the historical and technological backgrounds of the digital wave in the field measurement and control area. The intelligent sensors. actuators and digital network technologies are bringing down the innovations into the field measurement and control design by applying the recent Information Technologies. Also, the author presents the situations and technical direction of International Standardization activities in ISO/IEC in the Industrial Automation area. especially the activities in TC65: Industrial Process Measurement and Control where the author has been involved in its strategic planning for several years.
