Abstract
Generating the EDGE signal at essentially the same cost as for GSM is difficult due to the additional linearity required from the RF power circuitry. The use of polar modulation as an alternative approach is investigated, and found to yield excellent signal quality while eliminating any need for RF circuit linearity. Measurements are presented from both a handset design providing 1 Watt, and a scaled-up design providing over 20 Watts for base station use. Temperature stability and performance in the presence of output mismatch are also discussed.
