Abstract
The failure rate of the network is determined by the number of components, their individual failure rates, and how they are interconnected, as well as certain outside factors. In most existing cable television networks, service outages are more likely to be due to commercial electric power interruption than actual equipment failures. Network reliability can be improved by architectures in which the failure of some network elements does not lead to a communications outage.
