Abstract :
Manufacture of electric motors in the US is steadily declining due to manufacturers moving their operations to foreign countries. Many companies have sought to offset total cost of manufacture by introducing foreign labor into the cost equation, Material+Labor+Overhead=Manufacturing Cost. Since US motor manufacturing is a mature industry, it has resulting high labor and overhead costs compared to less developed or under-developed countries. In addition, American motor manufacturers have to factor in high regulatory tax burdens and meet regulating bodies´ requirements. Thus, the total cost of manufacture in US is substantially higher. In order to sustain electric motor manufacture in the US requires new methods of processing motors to make them more cost effective. One such method is automation of assembly combined with innovations such as self-bonding magnet wire.
