Abstract :
Mechanisms for flow/congestion control to be used in communication system are among the most important functions of communication protocols. Many mechanisms are being used, and even more have been published. In order to be able to compare them, a suitable classification is needed. In this paper, three disjoint classification schemes are proposed, which aim to be hierarchical, simple, and based on criteria that are as orthogonal as possible. Among them, the classification of control algorithm is the most elaborate. A simple notation to present te classification of algorithms is also given. The classification of several well-known control algorithms is presented.
