Abstract :
The fundamental limits for measuring the wavelength of optical signals is derived. The analysis provides a lower bound for any measurement apparatus. It is found that the lower limit depends on the optical power available for measurement, the statistical properties of the measured light and on the spectral distribution of the signal. Experimental measurements performed by the authors and presented by others are consistent with the limit.
