Abstract
A theoretical treatment of photonic crystals embedded in planar waveguides is presented, which is based on a finite-basis expansion for the electromagnetic field and which yields the dispersion of photonic modes below and above the light line as well as intrinsic radiation losses of quasi-guided modes. Results are shown for two kinds of systems: the one-dimensional lattice in membrane or silicon-on-insulator photonic crystal slabs, and the linear defect (channel waveguide) in the triangular lattice of holes.
