Abstract
A novel signal processing tool, mathematic morphology (MM), is introduced to improve the performance of fault transient based ultra-high-speed directional relay. In the presented technique, the transient current signals captured from each transmission line connected to the busbar are collected by the relay installed at the substation busbar for analyzing with MM to determine the fault direction. Simulation results show that this scheme is suitable for all types of faults occurring at different positions on the power lines. It also provides higher sensitivity as compared with traditional protection schemes besides of the operation speed.
