Abstract
This paper analyzed thrust characteristics by considering the step-skew method and permanent magnet (PM) overhang in a linear synchronous motor. Although the PM overhang increases the thrust, it also influences the air-gap flux density distribution in the stacking direction, and thus, each step length should be adjusted according to the existence and length of the PM overhang. 3-D finite element analysis is used to calculate the magnetic field and the thrust characteristics are compared each other. The analysis results show that the stacking length of both ends of the step should be reduced to get lower detent force and thrust ripples, and higher generated thrust as the PM overhang is increased.
