Abstract
In this paper, a new 12/8-pole doubly salient permanent-magnet (DSPM) machine is designed and analyzed. Due to its DSPM nature, this machine incorporates the advantageous features of their PM brushless DC (PMBLDC) and switched reluctance (SR) counterparts. Also, due to the unique 12/8-pole topology with rotor skewing, it offers excellent power density, minimum copper consumption and winding resistance as well as torque ripple. Its characteristics, including PM flux linkage, back EMF, and inductance, are analyzed by using the finite element method (FEM) in which the interaction between the PM field and the armature field are taken into account.
