Abstract
We present a new minimum description length type criterion for the problem of inferring the number of 2D complex sinusoids (cisoids) present in observed data contaminated by white Gaussian noise. The criterion does not require estimation of the 2D frequencies or selection of any subjective threshold parameters, and it is shown to be consistent. An application to the detection of the number of coherent signals in a 2D antenna array processing scenario illustrates the good complexity-performance trade-off of the proposed method.
