Abstract :
This paper reports the results of the USC student team that participated in the 2003 Future Energy Challenge competition. This team came up with an original solution to cut costs in the design of an electrical drive for home appliance applications. The work performed for the competition includes the design of all parts of the system including the motor, which has been designed and built at the university facilities. The paper describes the design, the simulation activity and the implementation of the three main sections of the system: control, power cell and motor. Preliminary laboratory results are also reported.
