Abstract :
We define experimentally and theoretically a regime in which relativistically intense pulses propagate through initially unionized mm-scale profiles of <1 atm He or H/sub 2/ gas without spectral or transverse mode distortion by simultaneously minimizing ionization-induced defocusing and relativistic self-focusing.
