Abstract
Probabilistic approaches to security assessment of power systems have been proposed in the research domain for a few years now, but practical implementations are still relatively rare. System operators mostly relay on deterministic procedures. In a deregulated environment, security assessment would greatly benefit from probabilistic rather than deterministic approaches for both technical and economic reasons. This paper analyses some of the probabilistic approaches to security assessment on the transmission grid, as found in the literature, in order to highlight relative strengths and weaknesses.
