Abstract :
This work describes the status of solar thermal and photovoltaic energy for large scale power plants and assess its growth potential. Economical figures are discussed together with the peculiar characteristics for each technology. The work is based on the experience gained in carrying out three projects partially funded within the European commission fifth framework programme for Research and Development, namely PS 10, Sevilla PV and Andasol. Data of the on-going, above mentioned projects is provided.
