Abstract
An overview of advanced traffic control strategies for urban road networks and freeway networks, as well as for route guidance and information systems is presented in this paper. Fixed-time techniques that use historical data to set up strategies for specific time-of-day control is discussed, but the main focus of the paper is on traffic control strategies that determine control inputs in real time to achieve specified goals.
