Abstract :
PRESTO is a cross-point buffered ATM switch with 16 STM-1 and two STM-16 ports designed for both cable television and video surveillance networks. Its switch fabric has been placed on a single FPGA circuit. This paper presents how PRESTO´S system architecture can be optimized so as to reduce its total component count and to increase its routing capacity. The optimizations are based on the usage of a new combined round-robin and longest-queue-first-serviced (RR-LQFS) arbiter and a new Header SRAM implementation which allows more efficient header translation and multicast functions to be used. The proposed optimizations are also justified with simulation results, which show the optimal buffer size.
