Abstract :
This paper aims to investigate the contribution of the SMES fed by a voltage source converter (VSMES) to the power system stability. The H theory based control method is presented for the VSMES. Simulation results show the high performance of the well-controlled VSMES in enhancing the power system stability. An exclusive model based on the identification technique employing Prony analysis is formulated to study the characteristics of the damping ratio of the open loop power system and the closed loop ones. The study result indicates that with the help of the controller the VSMES has the capability of changing the damping ratio of the power system so as to improve the stability of the power system.
