Abstract :
This paper investigates the smoothing of real-time MPEG-1 transcoded video for efficient transmission over best-effort IP networks, using intelligent partitioning and multiplexing of the bitstream at transport layer. The proposed scheme partitions packets according to their picture type and the partitioned packets are then multiplexed for transmission such that a single packet from anchor pictures is followed by two packets from B-pictures. The proposed scheme, a) smoothes the bit rate of the coded video and makes it more suitable for adaptive video streaming applications which varies the transmission bit rate to the available network bandwidth and, b) reduces the likelihood of losing the more important anchor packets thereby improving the quality of transmitted video. A number of simulation results are presented to show these points.
