Abstract :
We report the first experimental demonstration of laser cooling with thulium-doped BaY/sub 2/F/sub 8/. Cooling by /spl sim/1.5 K below ambient temperature is obtained at /spl lambda/ = 1.902 /spl mu/m in a single pass geometry.
