            Abstract :
We developed a conventional step-index type highly nonlinear bismuth oxide-based glass fiber. This fiber exhibits high nonlinearity (/spl gamma/=1360 W/sup -1/ km/sup -1/) because of the high nonlinearity of the glass material and the small effective core area.
