Abstract
Applying multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processing to optical free space systems can be powerful at reducing the loss due to atmospheric fading if the codes are properly chosen. Necessary conditions for identifying good codes are derived. Bounds for the error probability of the system illustrate how the performance depends on the design of the code.
