Abstract :
The 3GPP WCDMA specification requires that the mobile terminal supports space time transmit diversity (STTD) encoding of various physical channels on the downlink, meaning that it needs to know if any physical channel is STTD encoded. We propose an efficient and robust algorithm to detect STTD on the downlink by correlating the received signal at the mobile with the known patterns of the downlink synchronization channel (SCH) and the primary common pilot channel (P-CPICH). The correlation result is used to estimate the binary-valued relative phase between SCH and P-CPICH, which is set at the base station transmitter depending on whether STTD is used or not. Near-optimum practical decision metrics are introduced and a statistical analysis of the proposed method is also provided.
