  • Abstract
The resource reservation protocol (RSVP) can provide QoS due to its bandwidth guaranteed capacity. However, RSVP faces many challenges in wireless mobile IP networks. In this paper, we extend dynamic RSVP (DRSVP) to support soft handoff in wireless mobile IP networks. Four important advantages can be achieved when handoff occurs. First, allocation of resources is more flexible due to dynamic resource adjustment of DRSVP. Second, no additional bandwidth resources need to be pre-allocated in mobile IP networks. Third, lower handoff latency can be obtained. Finally, an optimal DRSVP tunnel is established after handoff, which can shorten the transmission delay. Performance analyses and simulation results show that the extended DRSVP indeed provides fast handoff in wireless mobile IP networks.
