Abstract
The deployment of high bit rate mobile cellular networks is enabling the delivery of new applications and services, most notably those that are video related - live video and on-demand streaming. While the nature of these applications and user expectations of the quality of service (QoS) demand huge network resources, these services are good multicast candidates since the same contents are to be transmitted to several users. In this paper, we analyze the usage of IPv4 for multicasting video streams in UMTS, including several practical considerations in order to provide for better QoS. We also propose several QoS oriented schemes that can be adopted to increase the efficient usage of network resources.
