Abstract :
On-line monitoring of meteorological (e.g. wind speed and direction, air pressure and temperature, visibility etc.) and oceanographic (e.g. current speed and direction, water level, wave height and wave direction, water temperature and density etc.) parameters are done in many ports and harbors around the world. Typically the collected data has been restricted to usage in the daily operation of the local port. Some recent ports and harbor installations, that are presented here, have successfully combined the traditional navigational use of data with environmental monitoring, scientific investigations (including data quality control, collection of historical data and inclusion into existing circulation models). The data has also been made available to the public over the Internet and so called WAP servers (available through cellular phones).
