  • Abstract
This paper proposes a novel computational approach to design optimization of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) with respect to some specific performance requirements. This new approach adopts finite element method as a magnetic field analysis tool for the design of experiments for the use of response surface analysis and the genetic algorithm as a searching tool for optimization work. The response surface methodology (RSM) determines the empirical models relating the performance of a motor and the design variables. This design and optimization approach were applied to permanent magnet synchronous motors and resulted in enhancing the performance of these motors.
