Abstract
This paper presents the performance and design of a new variable frequency 48V/1V voltage regulator module (VRM). Self-sustained oscillation control (SSOC) operation is used to achieve voltage regulation and high efficiency from no load to full load. The SSOC provides this VRM with a maximum operating frequency nearly equal to the minimum switching frequency of the variable frequency (VF) controller. This allows a high frequency operation of 620 kHz at full load and up to 910 kHz at no load. The SSOC controller proved to be a robust towards step disturbances with a small over/undershoot of less than 20 mV with an ultra high current slew rate of 1A/ns. Derived steady state characteristics provide a base for the design guidelines. PSIM simulation results are presented to validate the suggested work.
