Abstract :
The Matrix positioning system uses timings of network signals measured by the mobile terminal to calculate a terminal´s location. The calculation is normally carried out in an SMLC (serving mobile location centre) in the network, but it could instead be carried out within the terminal in an entirely autonomous fashion. This would mean that the terminal could locate itself without communicating with a network node. As a by-product, the transmission time offsets of the network transmitters would be calculated and stored within the terminal. This combination opens the possibility of a terminal containing satellite positioning hardware (such as a GPS receiver) providing itself with accurate time and position aiding without the need to connect to a network server.
