Abstract
The paper describes the impact of advancements in automatic testing of protective relays and some of the unique problems associated with automatic testing. First, the increased need for advanced automatic testing for commissioning protective relays is explained. Next, a detailed application of a unique problem associated with the automatic testing of a directional earth fault characteristic is presented. Finally the results are summarized and conclusions are drawn.
