Abstract :
This paper deals with the presentation of a new power generation topology which uses a four phase synchronous generator and a matrix converter as a frequency changer connected to a three phase electrical power grid. Ability to achieve fixed frequency in grid side from a fixed or a variable frequency of the generator, elimination of the mechanical speed reducer in power plant, capability to make auto start-up with elimination of the turbine start-up system are the major ideas. The matrix converter which operates at natural commutation is composed with thyristors. Knowing the system performances, three and two phase short circuits and also open circuit in grid side will be investigated. Additionally behaviour of the system on suddenly changes in initial (reference) rotor´s position and in generator excitation will be studied.
