Abstract
In order to increase the transmission rate in UTRAN (UMTS terrestrial radio access network), aspects of applying MIMO techniques to UMTS HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) transmission are introduced. It is shown that the Shannon capacity measure, working as the uplink transmitted channel metric, performs a major role in transmission rate determination, frame error rate estimation, and scheduling at Node B. A UMTS HSDPA simulator using MIMO techniques was developed. It allows the MIMO capacity enhancement to the UMTS HSDPA system to be estimated and leads to the conclusion that overall MIMO usage increases UMTS HSDPA system performance.
