Abstract
Using irregular, bit geometrically uniform, and recursive rate 1 inner encoders with 8-PSK Gray mapping, the iterative decoding convergence threshold signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is minimized for an independently fading Rayleigh channel with perfect channel state information. Further low SNR optimization is obtained by searching for code combinations with maximum slope of the active burst distance, using outer codes with maximum free distance. The convergence threshold and bit error rate estimates are shown for the best found code combinations.
