Abstract
The paper gives an overview of the service-oriented approach, focusing on its general strategic issues as well as on its technical foundations using Web services. Based on example scenarios, the overall potential of this emerging technology is outlined with respect to open systems integration, dynamic binding, and flexible management of distributed systems.
